What causes persistent foam on my aeration basin?+
Stable foam is usually caused by filamentous bacteria such as Nocardia and Microthrix parvicella. These organisms thrive on fats, oils, greases and long-chain fatty acids, and their hydrophobic cell walls trap air bubbles, creating a thick foam blanket that can overflow channels and screens.
How does this product reduce foam?+
The formulation introduces specialised aerobic bacteria and biological surfactants that outcompete foam-forming filaments, break down the fats and lipids they feed on, and improve floc structure so air escapes instead of becoming trapped in stable foam.
How long before we see the foam subside?+
Most sites notice reduced foam stability and improved clarity within 2–4 weeks of starting a regular dosing program. Heavy or long-standing Nocardia foams may take longer because the existing foam blanket and grease inventory must be worked through gradually.
Is it safe for our existing activated sludge biology?+
Yes. The product is non-toxic, biodegradable and designed to work with your existing biomass. It does not contain caustic biocides or defoaming chemicals that can shock the sludge or damage beneficial floc-forming organisms.
How is the product dosed?+
It is typically applied directly to the aeration basin or return activated sludge line, either manually or via a simple dosing pump. Dose rates depend on influent load, foam severity and plant volume, and Aquativ can provide a site-specific dosing schedule.
Can it be used alongside other Aquativ products?+
Yes. It pairs well with Aquative BOD / COD Reducer and Sludge Reducer programs where foam is accompanied by high organic load or excess sludge. Your Aquativ representative can map a combined program.
Will it stop all foaming immediately?+
Not instantly. The product works biologically, so it addresses the underlying cause rather than masking it with a chemical defoamer. Existing foam may take a few days to break down, and new foam formation should progressively reduce as the microbial balance shifts.
